TRIGGER WARNING: “First Impressions”
At first this had me questioning a lot of things about the current comedy video scene. I questioned some parts of me that have been collecting data on the attitude of Southern Californian Asians who are totally “Americanized,” but at the same time make so many transparent “inside jokes” about funny things that they found when their mom dropped them off at China Town. We used to think of these kinds of people as “mySpace scene.” It’s almost as if this same stereotype has transposed cultural relevance. The way that Filipino has emerged on the Tumblr scene.
Later, I began to relate so strongly to this dad, my own grandfather an authentic, accented immigrant. He had somehow transcended College Humor™ to a sort of global comedic awareness of the homogenized “foreign patriarchal figure.”
All of the sudden, I’m face to face with a Wikipedia style Personal Plea for awareness of diversity on the internet. I then became very aware of the new YouTube interface, and began to question whether or not I totally understood it’s 2012 capabilities. I thought that now you might be able to override the “related videos” screen at the end of the clip with your own personalized “footer” with customized links to personal videos. Even if this is a possible new feature, the creator of this skit actually took minutes of extra content length to create what might otherwise be a next-gen YouTube Widget. I now question whether or not this would-be-professional-standup comic was so advanced that he created this new interface prototype before the Developers themselves? Or else the footer was created in-house as an imitation of the YouTube editing tool because he is imitating “professional content”?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
